ICC Kyoto Initiatives > International Environmental Conferences
Since the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol, “Kyoto” has become a keyword for environmentally friendly initiatives, and Kyoto City has implemented the “Do You Kyoto? Are you doing something good for the environment?” initiative. In commemoration of the 49th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was held at ICC Kyoto in May 2019, the “Kyoto Appeal to Jointly Achieve 1.5ºC” was announced with the aim to reduce CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050.
Event sustainability has become an increasingly important theme in the MICE industry in recent years. In June 2016, Kyoto became the first city in Asia to join the Global Destination Sustainability Index.
ICC Kyoto is widely known throughout the world as the venue where the Kyoto Protocol was adopted at the third session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3), held in Kyoto in December 1997. As the site where the Protocol was adopted, ICC Kyoto is actively working on environmental issues and is also a constituent organization of The Earth Hall of Fame Kyoto, which honors the achievements of those who have made significant contributions to preserving the global environment, with past award winners and memorabilia on exhibit within the conference center.
In order to help address global environmental issues, we will continue to proactively welcome and support international conferences on the environment.
ICC Kyoto has become the stage for important sustainability-related debates, such as COP3 in 1997, the World Water Forum in 2003, and IPCC in 2019. Just as the Kyoto Protocol adopted at COP3 later led to the Paris Agreement (2015), the many achievements that have been made at ICC Kyoto have become an important legacy for sustainability now and in the future.
In order to make sustainable conferences a reality, we are working on a variety of initiatives together with organizers and related parties.
